From the Pastor’s Pen
May 11, 2023
Mother’s Day is upon us again, which can be a joyful, sorrowful, and even painful time. Some of us know or remember our mothers fondly, others grieve the loss, and still others lacked the positive relationship with their mother. As our feelings vary, one of the ways to celebrate as a community of faith is to honor the women of faith leading and caring for us in Christ’s name.
The tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day began as many Methodist women’s movements did, with meeting a need for their community. In the mid-1800’s, Ann Jarvis began mother’s clubs and family support systems for the widows and mothers living in poverty. Most of the families she worked with were struggling because the husbands and sons in their families had been injured or died in war. She not only set up these small groups, but she advocated that in the name of Christ we seek peace first. Ann also advocated that mothers be recognized for their work and relationships in an era where women were often overlooked and underprivileged. The culmination of this became Mother’s Day, a day to recognize and remember the women in your life who have shaped your faith, and loved you.
As you remember, grieve, or struggle with this weekend’s holiday, let’s take time to seek the intention of the day- to give thanks to God that we have had influences in our lives that mother us, whether relative or friend.
Blessings,
Pastor Casey

Whether you lead in your church, your business, or your community, everyone is invited to grow as the church together! Join us on May 20th for training provided by the Clinch Mountain District.
For the better part of a generation, the church has faced a rapidly changing world, one that has pushed the church out of the center of the culture to the margins. Then COVID-19 happened, and the disruption to church as we knew it accelerated. Join us for a workshop on learning to lead all over again in a totally disrupted environment. Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains and Tempered Resilience, will serve as our guide into the uncharted territory.
$25 per person. Lunch is provided.
